From Brass Hat to Bowler Hat by Major General de Guingand is well written and concise. It is also a quick and easy read. It is an addendum of Guingand's Memoirs as most of the book deals with his life after leaving the Army. The first chapter is about his tenure as the Chief of Staff of the 8th Army and the 21st Army Group. He bemoans the fact that Auchinleck's contributions to the Victory in North Africa have been ignored by history. He also mentions Montgomery's pettiness in not allowing the Africa Star campaign medal to be issued to soldiers who served in the 8th Army under Auchinleck. He does however defend Monty's lack of aggressiveness in exploiting the victory of Alamein. He complains that Monty took complete credit for recommendations de Guingand made that led to victory at both Alamein and Mareth. According to de Guingand Monty took credit in his diary, the campaign account, and in his memoirs. He states that while Monty demanded absolute loyalty and hated intrigue among his subordinates that he, Monty, was guilty of disloyalty and intriguing against his superiors. de Guingand covers his opposition to Operation Market Garden and how he saved Monty's career after the Battle of the Bulge. The rest of the book is devoted to his transition to civilian life which included Monty demanding that de Guingand not write about the difficulties between Monty and Ike during the war. He goes on to tell of his experiences in South Africa where he became a successful businessman.
